Route Overview

Starting on the western side of Kilimanjaro at Londorossi Gate, the Lemosho Route crosses the pristine Shira Plateau. Its 8-day profile allows for exceptional acclimatization, making it the route with the highest summit success rate on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day-by-Day Trek Itinerary

DAY 1

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp) – 2,820m

After park registration, begin the trek through dense forest. Overnight at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp).

DAY 2

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp – 3,610m

Emerge from forest into heath zone and cross the Shira ridge. Overnight at Shira 1 Camp.

DAY 3

Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp – 3,850m

Gentle trek across Shira Plateau toward Kibo's glacier-capped peak. Overnight at Shira 2 Camp.

DAY 4

Shira 2 to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower – 4,640m)

Climb high to Lava Tower (4,640m) and descend into Barranco Valley (3,960m). Overnight at Barranco Camp.

DAY 5

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp – 4,035m

Tackle the Great Barranco Wall and cross alpine ridges to Karanga Valley. Overnight at Karanga Camp.

DAY 6

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp – 4,640m

Steady climb to Barafu Ridge base camp; early rest before summit assault. Overnight at Barafu Camp.

DAY 7

Summit Day – Barafu to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), descend to Mweka Camp

Midnight ascent via Stella Point to Uhuru Peak at sunrise; descend to Mweka (3,100m). Overnight at Mweka Camp.

DAY 8

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – 1,640m

Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate for certificates and celebration.
