Route Overview
The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Featuring comfortable wooden sleeping huts at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo, it offers a classic trekking route with stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Route Highlights
Day-by-Day Trek Itinerary
Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)
Hike through lush rainforest with possible sightings of blue monkeys. Overnight at Mandara Hut.
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Ascend through moorland with panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Overnight at Horombo Hut.
Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Ridge / Zebra Rocks (4,020m) and return. Overnight at Horombo Hut.
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Trek across the alpine Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to base camp. Overnight at Kibo Hut.
Summit Attempt – Kibo to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then down to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Midnight summit climb via Gilman's Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Descend to Horombo Hut. Overnight at Horombo Hut.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1,860m)
Descend past Mandara Hut to Marangu Gate for certificates and celebration.
